Great Experience

With very few masonry options in San Diego County, we had concerns about finding a competent and trustworthy outfit. Enter Paul Walker's Custom Masonry and Fireplace Design. Things were smooth from the initial inspection through the repair of our Chimney's cracked flue tiles. Paul's a busy guy but squeezed us in when an availability opened a few weeks prior to our scheduled repair. Paul and his crew arrived on-time, finished on schedule (and slightly under-budget!), and left no traces they'd even been in the house (besides the safe and functional fireplace).

Great experience. Would do it all over again.

The Result is Beautiful

We happened upon an antique french marble fireplace surround that was entirely disassembled--about 1,000 pounds worth. We had no good idea of who was capable of not only putting it together and putting it in our own house, but also doing the demolition of our existing fireplace. We happened upon Paul Walker and Custom Masonry & Fireplace Design through the internet. Paul came to our house--on time--and carefully examined the antique fireplace as well as our own house. He put together a design and a quote that made sense and was reasonable. When it came time to do the work, Paul and his assistant showed up on time and spent the first morning preparing the house. They moved all the furniture and created an entire construction "bubble" around the project out of plastic so that no dust would penetrate into the rest of the house. They protected our floors with four layers of material and set up their tools in an area that did not disturb the rest of the house. Amazingly, they completed the entire job in just less than two days. The result is beautiful and our house was clean and tidy when they left. We could not be more happy with the quality of the work, the price and the way that Paul conducts his business.

It is always wonderful to find a hardworking, trustworthy, and honest contractor; in Paul Walker my husband and I feel that we hit the jackpot! Paul came highly recommended for his knowledge and experience in chimney/fireplace maintenance and repair by an expert fireplace inspector; he did not disappoint. He listened to our concerns, did a very thorough inspection of our area (and pointed out roof flashing problems that we needed to get fixed), gave us a clear understanding as to what we were facing (which we were unable to receive from other repair companies) and gave a very good estimate for what is generally a difficult job - fixing a crack in a pre-fabricated chimney. When the work started I was a little worried as they had to remove the fence and install massive scaffolding, not to mention the huge amount of cement and mortar that they were removing. I needn't have worried. When Paul was done, the only trace that there had been work was the patched crack. Best of all and what will have me singing his praises forever is that since Paul was able to finish the work faster than he had estimated in the billing, he added free painting of the chimney, free fire log installation, free key creation, free fireplace painting, and free long gas-line installation. We could not believe it and feel so fortunate to have found him. Rest assured, we will be using him again and I would recommend him in a second to anyone who has any fireplace issues.

Exactly What I Was Looking For

Paul Gave Me My Money's Worth

Summary of Work performed: Repaired flue and installed new fireplace backing with new chimney interior. Removed old painted cinder block fireplace and installed new facing. Installed new spark arrestor. Cleaned up and removed rubbish. Details: After looking at an eyesore of a fireplace for too many years and meeting other companies, I selected Paul to do the work after meeting with him for an on-site opinion and estimate. The original cinder block and plank mantle had been painted about five times (judging from the paint I had to scrape and sand off the mantle), and it was time for a real change. On the appointed morning, the workers showed up punctually and ready to work. They put a plastic dust barrier up and protected the hardwood floors so the dust and noise were well contained. Throughout the two-day job I got regular updates on the progress; the workers were courteous, personable, and professional. The cleanup was fast and thorough. Custom Masonry and Fireplace Design doesn't do new mantles, but they have a good working relationships with The Wood Furniture Factory in National City and Bret Qua was very helpful in choosing a design for the new fireplace. I supplied a leftover plank from my hardwood floor and he matched the color well. All in all, I am very, VERY pleased with the new fireplace and mantle. The pricing was at the higher end of my budget bracket, but in retrospect Paul gave me my money's worth.

Guarantee's His Work

Paul is an experienced craftsman and knows fireplaces, particularly in the older homes. When I purchased my property a fireplace was a must- but getting it to work unlined was not an option, I was also worried about structural damage over the years. Paul came in and gave an honest answer as to what is needed- he relined and built up my firebox- in/out in one day- very polite and clean crew. I was under the impression from other referrals that there was only one fireplace repair company, I am glad I poked around and found Paul, because honestly he is the ONLY one I trust to fix and maintain my fireplace. Expert In Fireplace Repair

Paul fixed my fireplace in a 1935 beach bungalow this year, and he did just what we needed! The fireplace was not well constructed, and he recommended tearing the whole thing down, but when we said we couldn't afford that, he did the next best thing, and gave us a reasonable bid, and then was very fast and thorough and left the house spotless afterwards. Worked With Me Every Step Of The Way

We purchased a house that had a fireplace with a crumbling and unsafe surround. We hired Paul to demo the surround and build it back up. We also worked with him to create a hearth that fit in with the style of the house (Spanish style.) He also rebuilt a section of the back of the firebox that was failing, connected the gas line and did some work on the chimney. He and his assistant were excellent. Paul listened to my description of how I wanted the fireplace to look. He worked with me every step of the way. He was very concerned about saftey and got everything right. He also did the little things like pick out just the right tile from the group I bought. Additionally, I feel that Paul is honest. He did not pressure us and gave us a ton of options. We Are Interior Designers And We Highly Recommend His Work

We have a 1929 Spanish home in North Park. The fireplace and chimney were in bad shape aesthetically and functionally. Paul lined our flue to get it up to code, rebuilt the firebox, rebuilt our mantle and did some other detail work to the facing, laid a new border tile on the hearth, installed the gas hookup, put in a new ash pit cover, and I know there's more I'm missing.... In conclusion he is an expert on fireplaces. We could not have been happier with Paul's service. He worked on our project a few years ago and we still talk about the seamless experience. An Ethical Business Person To Work With

I had just purchased a home for our son and family, and found out that the fireplace and chimney were in bad shape. I called out a couple of Masonry Guys and chose Paul to do the work. He told me that his visual inspection was limited and that there could be more damage than was apparent. I was very nervous that this could become a nightmare, but not sure what alternatives we would have. Paul very carefully discussed options to us and we decided to go ahead. The damage was more than anticipated, I remember being very nervous of the eventual variance in price. However, I was more than delighted to find that Paul had simply charged for additional materials and had thrown in the extra time spent as good will. Never Met A Workman And Company That Were More Professional

My 1941 house had a fireplace with a chimney that was never properly lined, was too short, and had neither a working damper nor a spark arrester. Bricks and joints near the top of the chimney also needed repair. Paul (the owner) and his helper replaced the firebox, plastered the smoke chamber, put in a new stainless steel chimney liner, raised the chimney, tuckpointed the joints, and installed a damper and spark arrester and more. Plus it was all done in one long day with perfect neatness. When he left, there was no sign he'd ever been there - until you looked at my new fireplace. I've never met a workman and company that were more professional.

Completely Satisfied With Our New Fireplace And Paul's Work

For several years our precast Rampart General fireplace was deteriorating. Since we don't use the fireplace and instead have a pellet stove insert, it was easy to put it off. Two years ago our chimney sweep gave us Paul's name. We contacted him and although he was very helpful we again postponed the decision when we were given a general estimate of the cost. This year sections of the exterior chimney were breaking apart and it became a safety issue. I emailed Paul and received a phone call within 45 minutes. He had all the details from our initial contact 2 years ago. We setup an appointment for him to evaluate our fireplace and the next business day we had our detailed estimate. We decided to work with Paul because he had experience replacing our type of fireplace and he did all the work that was required. He was the only contractor that we needed to deal with. Our home was protected from dust and damage during the demolition and our living space was kept very clean. Our new fireplace was completed a day earlier than the original schedule. Our home and yard were left clean of all construction materials. We now have a safe and spectacular fireplace. Our entire neighborhood has the same precast fireplace. Knowledge And Experience In Fireplace Construction And Restoration

Paul Walker, owner of Custom Masonry & Fireplace Design Inc., did a complete renovation / restoration of our batchelder fireplace. He did much of the work himself. The original brick chimney was taken down, and replaced with steel reinforced concrete blocks, since it was pulling away from the house. A new firebox and concrete hearth pad were also put in. During the renovation the batchelder tiles were carefully removed, a difficult job since the tiles were adhered directly to the concrete fire box and hearth pad, in order to reuse as many as possible in the restoration. The tiles he couldn't save or had deteriorated over time beyond use were replicated. A number of the tiles had complex profiles and compound curves but all turned very nicely. When the fireplace and hearth were completed it was hard to tell the old from the new tiles. My wife and I were very pleased with Paul's knowledge and experience in fireplace construction and restoration, taking care while in our house (oak hardwood floors), cleanup, and overall professionalism. We highly recommend Paul and his company.

We had Paul completely rebuild our old ugly fireplace. He and his helper did a great job and we are very pleased with the results. The work was done very neatly with all the surrounding rooms in our house protected from dust and masonry powder with plastic sheets. He is very artistic and has good suggestions. We strongly recommend him for fireplace remodeling.

We have a 1929 Spanish home in North Park. The fireplace and chimney were in bad shape aesthetically and functionally. Paul lined our flue to get it up to code, rebuilt the firebox, rebuilt our mantle and did some other detail work to the facing, laid a new border tile on the hearth, installed the gas hookup, put in a new ash pit cover, and I know there's more I'm missing.... In conclusion he is an expert on fireplaces. We could not have been happier with Paul's service. He worked on our project a few years ago and we still talk about the seamless experience. Equally as good as his work was his efficiency and cleanliness. As soon as he was done with something his assistant was right there to clean it up which we really appreciated. I had just purchased a home for our son and family, and found out that the fireplace and chimney were in bad shape. I called out a couple of Masonry Guys and chose Paul to do the work. He told me that his visual inspection was limited and that there could be more damage than was apparent. I was very nervous that this could become a nightmare, but not sure what alternatives we would have. Paul very carefully discussed options to us and we decided to go ahead. The damage was more than anticipated, I remember being very nervous of the eventual variance in price. However, I was more than delighted to find that Paul had simply charged for additional materials and had thrown in the extra time spent as good will. He knew that this house was purchased on a shoestring as a legacy from my late husband, and that day I knew that human compassion is still alive and well. Woud I recommend Paul and his company? Paul is an experienced craftsman and knows fireplaces, particularly in the older homes. When I purchased my property a fireplace was a must- but getting it to work unlined was not an option, I was also worried about structural damage over the years. Paul came in and gave an honest answer as to what is needed- he relined and built up my firebox- in/out in one day- very polite and clean crew. I was under the impression from other referrals that there was only one fireplace repair company, I am glad I poked around and found Paul, because honestly he is the ONLY one I trust to fix and maintain my fireplace. Paul fixed my fireplace in a 1935 beach bungalow this year, and he did just what we needed! The fireplace was not well constructed, and he recommended tearing the whole thing down, but when we said we couldn't afford that, he did the next best thing, and gave us a reasonable bid, and then was very fast and thorough and left the house spotless afterwards. Summary of Work performed: Repaired flue and installed new fireplace backing with new chimney interior. Removed old painted cinder block fireplace and installed new facing. Installed new spark arrestor. Cleaned up and removed rubbish.

Details:
After looking at an eyesore of a fireplace for too many years and meeting other companies, I selected Paul to do the work after meeting with him for an on-site opinion and estimate. The original cinder block and plank mantle had been painted about five times (judging from the paint I had to scrape and sand off the mantle), and it was time for a real change.

On the appointed morning, the workers showed up punctually and ready to work. They put a plastic dust barrier up and protected the hardwood floors so the dust and noise were well contained. Throughout the two-day job I got regular updates on the progress; the workers were courteous, personable, and professional. The cleanup was fast and thorough.

Custom Masonry and Fireplace Design doesn't do new mantles, but they have a good working relationships with The Wood Furniture Factory in National City (http://www.thewoodfurnit…) and Bret Qua was very helpful in choosing a design for the new fireplace. I supplied a leftover plank from my hardwood floor and he matched the color well.

All in all, I am very, VERY pleased with the new fireplace and mantle. The pricing was at the higher end of my budget bracket, but in retrospect Paul gave me my money's worth.

We happened upon an antique french marble fireplace surround that was entirely disassembled--about 1,000 pounds worth. We had no good idea of who was capable of not only putting it together and putting it in our own house, but also doing the demolition of our existing fireplace.

We happened upon Paul Walker and Custom Masonry & Fireplace Design through the internet. Paul came to our house--on time--and carefully examined the antique fireplace as well as our own house. He put together a design and a quote that made sense and was reasonable.

When it came time to do the work, Paul and his assistant showed up on time and spent the first morning preparing the house. They moved all the furniture and created an entire construction "bubble" around the project out of plastic so that no dust would penetrate into the rest of the house.

They protected our floors with four layers of material and set up their tools in an area that did not disturb the rest of the house. Amazingly, they completed the entire job in just less than two days. The result is beautiful and our house was clean and tidy when they left.

We could not be more happy with the quality of the work, the price and the way that Paul conducts his business.
